About GATE-
The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs at Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee) jointly administer the conduct of GATE Exam. The operations related to GATE in 8 zones all over India are managed by a Zonal GATE Office at IISc. or IITs. The Organizing Institute (OI) is responsible for the end-to-end process and coordination amongst the administering Institutes. The Organizing Institute for GATE 2016 was IISc Bangalore, for GATE 2017 was IIT Roorkee & for GATE 2018 is IIT Guwahati.
Highlights of GATE 2018 are:
- Examinations for all papers would be conducted by an ONLINE Computer Based Test (CBT). The online exam will have Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) and Numerical Questions where answers are to be keyed in by the candidates using virtual keypad
- GATE 2018 examinations are to be held on February(Saturdays and Sundays only)
- For GATE 2018 the entire process of filling up application form, uploading of certificates/documents etc. is online and the candidates need not send any hard copy of their application form/documents, etc. to any of the IIT/IISc zonal GATE office
- The payment of application fees is online through different modes like net banking or e-challan
- Candidates have to download their admit cards from GATE 2018 website

•Eligibility Criteria for GATE 2018 (No Age Limit)Candidates with any of the following qualification are eligible to appear in GATE Exam.
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering/Technology (4 Years after 10+2 or 3 years after Diploma in Engineering/Technology) and those who are in the final year of such programs.
- Bachelor's Degree in Architecture (Five year course) and those who are in the final year of such programs.
- Bachelor's degree of Four-year program in Science (B.S.) and those who are in the final year of such programs.
- Master's degree in any branch of Science/Mathematics/Statistics/Computer Applications or Equivalent and those who are in the final year of such programs.
- Four-year Integrated Master's degree (Post-B.Sc.) in Engineering/Technology and those in the second or higher year of such programs.
- Five-year Integrated Master's degree or Dual Degree in Engineering/Technology and those in the fourth or higher year of such programs.
- Five-year integrated M.Sc. or Five year integrated B.Sc./M.Sc. Degree and those in the final year of such programs.
- Candidates with qualifications obtained through examinations conducted by professional societies recognized by UPSC/AICTE as equivalent to B.E./B.Tech. Those who have completed section A of AMIE or equivalent of such professional courses are also eligible.
Candidates from Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Nepal, Singapore, Sri Lanka & United Arab Emirates must have completed or are in the final year of their Bachelor's degree in Engineering/ Technology or Post-graduate (M.Sc.) degree in any relevant science subject.

IES-Indian Engineering Services Examination
Also Known as “Life changing examination”

Indian Engineering Services or IES consists of a select base of engineers working under the GOI (Government of India).
IES officials hold the Class-1 officer post/designation. Their prime responsibility includes administering the Public Sector Indian economy. The IES job role can be broadly classified as managing PSUs such as Indian Railways, Telecom, Power sector to working for Central Water engineering, Central Engineering Service, Defence Service of Engineers, etc., depending upon individual engineering specialisation or the nature of service they are recruited for.
Candidates seeking recruitment for an IES post, need to appear for a competitive exam called the Engineering Services Examination or IES exam. UPSC IES is a single exam, including all engineering branches, held by the UPSC or the Union Public Services Commission to recruit candidates for the IES posts. The IES exam pattern is the same every year, constituting of a written exam and an interview.
Those who qualify the Engineering Services Examination are eligible for recruitment in the identified four categories:
- Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Electrical Engineering
- Civil Engineering
JOB PROFILE-
IES officials perform various job roles, spanning across technical and managerial work delivery for the GOI. The initial designation an IES officer holds is of Assistant Executive Engineer/Assistant commissioner or Assistant Director and going up in the hierarchy; the highest post is Chairman or Managing Director. The entire career tenure of an IES office is smooth and the career progression positive, with IES officers gaining high esteem and job value. The IES salary is good depending upon the esteemed position and their critical role under the GOI.
After having gained an experience of 3-4 years, an IES official is given a promotion to the next designation of an Engineer, Work Manager or Director. Post eight years of IES service, an individual is officially designated as Joint Director/Deputy General Manager.
Post that, the Joint Director is eligible for the position of Chief Engineer/Joint General Manager-level 2 IES officer. Mostly, engineers with at least 20 years of experience are in consideration for the post of Chief Engineer/Additional General Manager, and after 30 years an individual is entitled to the position of Senior General Manager/Engineer-in-Chief. The best IES performers with an experience of over 34 years are eligible for designation of CM or MD of a governmental unit or organisation.

Eligibility-
- candidate for this examination must have attained the age of 21 years and must not have attained the age of 30 years on the 1st August, of the exam year.
- The upper age-limit of 30 years will be relaxable up to 35 years in the case of Government servants of the following categories, if they are employed in a Department/Office under the control of any of the authorities mentioned in column 1 below and apply for admission to the examination for all or any of the Service(s)/Posts mentioned in column 2, for which they are otherwise eligible.
- The upper age-limit prescribed above will be further relaxable:
- Obtained a degree in Engineering from a university incorporated by an act of the central or state legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as universities under section-3 of the university grants commission act, 1956 or
- Passed Section A and B of the Institution Examinations of the Institution of Engineers (India) or
- Obtained a degree/diploma in Engineering from such foreign University/College/Institution and under such conditions as may be recognised by the Government for the purpose from time to time or
